Alien Pinball Machine – The Beast is Back

Alien Pinball Machine – The Beast is Back

Pinball Heaven have partnered with Pinball Brothers distributor Pinball Bazaar, to bring you the soon to be launched Alien pinball machine.

The 1979 Alien science fiction horror film directed by Ridley Scott, broke box office records across the world when it was first released and won the 1980 Academy Award for Best Visual Effects. The success of Alien spawned a media franchise of films, novels, comic books, video games, and toys. The 1986 sequel Aliens, directed by James Cameron received critical acclaim for its action sequences and received Academy Awards for Best Sound Effects Editing and Best Visual Effects and is now considered one of the greatest films of the 1980s.

Pinball Brothers

Pinball Brothers Logo

Pinball Brothers, who are based in Orbero, Sweden, announced the Heighway Pinball remake late last year, but have recently updated their social media to confirm their new Alien pinball machine is now complete and ready to be shipped.

“When the computer on the commercial space tug Nostromo detects a transmission in the middle of its flight home, it wakes its crew to investigate the source of the signal. On the moon LV-426 they discover the wreck of an old spaceship.

Step inside this high octane, survival horror and genre defining action thriller, bringing to life two of the iconic Alien films, both Alien and Aliens in this world under glass.

Packed full of toys, mechs and features, whilst delivering ground up improvements. Alien from Pinball Brothers brings the beast back.”

An Improved Alien Pinball Machine

According to Pinball News, Although it remains essentially the same wide-bodied design we saw before, there have been several changes from the Heighway Pinball version of the game.

Pinball Brothers have stated that, amongst other things, their new release benefits from improved electronics. Most obviously, the two main LCD displays, one large display in the centre of the backbox and a smaller one inset into the playfield, have been combined into a single 18.5″ panel at the bottom of the backbox. There are also two 4″ speakers either side of the display for the main game audio.

The five-inch airlock display remains, although the housing has been made thinner and less obtrusive. This change created space behind the airlock for a ‘sneak-in’ back entrance which is registered by a dedicated switch and given an appropriate award. A new illuminated Weapons Status Display now sits where the playfield LCD was previously positioned.

The LED board which illuminates these weapon indicator inserts is part of a whole new electronics system developed by Pinball Brothers. The new system uses smaller, easier-to-access circuit boards which run off a PC in the same way as the Heighway Pinball system. Although PC-based, there is currently no internet connectivity for software updates, on-line challenges or global scoreboards.

Alien Pinball Machine Gameplay

Magnetic Ball Grabber & Virtual Ball Lock

The illuminated cabinet side panels have gone, but it is understood a magnet ball grabber at the top right of the playfield which was taken out of the original design because it clashed with the slide-rails under the playfield has been able to be reinstated thanks to a new slide-rail design. In addition, a virtual ball lock for the Hypersleep Chamber has been upgraded to the physical three-ball lock which was originally planned, together with the addition of a dedicated lifter mechanism to eject the balls.

The illuminated standup targets in the game have been upgraded too, from a single colour to full RGB lighting, while some targets which weren’t previously illuminated have got the RGB lighting enhancement too.

Elsewhere on the playfield, the Xenomorph mechanism which was so problematic on the Heighway Pinball games has been made more robust with metal parts replacing plastic ones and a new dedicated driver board. The Facehugger models on the slingshots have also been changed. A new more durable material has been used for the models while the slingshot kicker arms have been redesigned.

The additional devices, switches and lights and the new boardset all need support in the software, so Pinball Brothers have been working with one of the original programmers, Brian Dominy, to properly integrate them.

The cabinet design is now much more traditional, without the rounded backbox or modular flipper button boxes. The magazine frame holding the playfield glass has also been removed, replaced with the much more familiar glass slide rails and lock bar.

The Mandalorian Pinball Machine Released

The Mandalorian Pinball Machine Released – 11th May 2021

Further to our recent blog post, Stern Pinball has today released The Mandalorian Pinball Machine, and as we suggested, Gary Stern is looking to engage a whole new pinball generation with this epic tale.

The Story of The Mandalorian

The story of The Mandalorian is set after the fall of the Galactic Empire and before the emergence of the First Order. The series follows the travails of a lone gunfighter in the outer reaches of the galaxy, far from the authority of the New Republic.

In this action-packed pinball quest, players are transported to a galaxy far, far away as they play as the Mandalorian, teaming up with key allies and protecting Grogu, while battling dangerous enemies and forces across their journey.

“…an engaging and exciting story for an entirely new generation of fans…”

“Star Wars is timeless and our players have enjoyed every pinball machine reimagined by the iconic space saga,” said Gary Stern, Chairman and CEO of Stern Pinball, Inc. “Stern’s new pinball machine, inspired by The Mandalorian, continues that tradition with an engaging and exciting story for an entirely new generation of fans around the world. Collaborating with Lucasfilm, we have brought all of the suspense, excitement, and action from the Star Wars galaxy into a one-of-a-kind pinball adventure perfect for any location or home game room.”

Innovative, Motorized Rotating Playfield

Prepare for battle on the gravity-changing, rotating Encounter upper mini playfield available on the Premium and Limited Edition models. This innovative, motorized rotating playfield is packed with six stand-up targets, lights, and two full-size flippers for high intensity pinball action.

Watch out for ambushes! Like the Mandalorian seen in the series, players can be ambushed by enemy forces. A dynamic inner loop shot activates an up/down horseshoe scoop ramp for fast, repeatable precision shooting, creating tense experiences on the Premium and Limited Edition models.

The Mandalorian Pinball – Official Game Trailer

Multiball Mayhem

Players can navigate their way to multiball mayhem by hitting a unique hanging uplift target attached to a custom molded Razor Crest ship. Success in hitting the target qualifies a center ramp shot on the Pro, Premium, and Limited Edition models.

The Mandalorian Pinball Features

Features of The Mandalorian-inspired pinball machines include a large custom sculpture of Grogu, authentic video and audio from seasons one and two, and exclusive custom speech performed by actor Carl Weathers (Greef Karga). The game includes the iconic title theme song by Ludwig Göransson and stunning hand-drawn artwork by Randy Martinez, one of today’s most popular comic artists.

Only 750 limited edition machines will be available. The limited edition version includes an exclusive full color mirrored backglass inspired by Beskar armor, iconic custom cabinet artwork, custom high gloss powder-coated pinball armor, a custom designer autographed bottom arch, exclusive inside art blades, upgraded audio system, anti-reflection pinball playfield glass, shaker motor, a sequentially numbered plaque, and Certifcate of Authenticity.

Mandalorian Pinball Machine – Pinball Rumour Mill

Mandalorian Pinball Machine – Pinball Rumour Mill

Rumours have recently started circulating about the possibility of a Mandalorian pinball machine. Are these rumours true? And if so, who would produce it, and when?

The Mandalorian

The Mandalorian is an American space western television series created by Jon Favreau for the streaming service Disney+. It is the first live-action series in the Star Wars franchise, beginning five years after the events of Return of the Jedi. It stars Pedro Pascal as the title character, a lone bounty hunter who goes on the run after being hired to retrieve “The Child”.

The Mandalorian premiered with the launch of Disney+ on November 12, 2019. The eight-episode first season was met with positive reviews, was nominated for Outstanding Drama Series at the 72nd Primetime Emmy Awards, and won seven Primetime Creative Arts Emmy Awards. A second season premiered on October 30, 2020, and a third season is in pre-production, with Disney confirming that the release date is Christmas 2021.

The popularity of The Mandalorian makes it the perfect licencing vehicle, but if a pinball manufacturer were to agree a licence, who is it most likely to be?

Stern & The Mandalorian

If anyone were to agree a Mandalorian pinball machine licence, the smart money would have to be on Stern. The theme would be a natural fit, as The Mandalorian is a Disney title and an offshoot of Lucasfilm’s Star Wars; Stern already has a positive relationship with both.

The Mandalorian could also figure as part of a Stern incentive to expand the pinball demographic to a younger age group. After all, Stranger Things’ main demographic is 18 to 24 year olds, while George Lucas told Jon Favreau the target audience of The Mandalorian should focus more on kids.

And although The Mandalorian only notched up an initial 40 million views, as compared to Stranger Things’ 64 million views, it has to be pointed out that Stranger Things was launched on the already highly popular Netflix platform, whereas The Mandalorian premiered with the launch of Disney+.

Given that Disney+ has expanded from just 10 million subscribers at launch to a whopping 73 million at the end of last year, there is the distinct possibility that The Mandalorian Series 3 will outperform Stranger Things. So, if Gary Stern was looking to introduce pinball to a younger demographic, he might well have hit the nail right on the head.

Mandalorian Pinball Machine Release Date

With The Mandalorian 3 not showing until Christmas 2021, Stern has got two choices: launch The Mandalorian pinball machine now based on Series 1 and 2, with future Series 3 updates available, or wait for the launch of Series 3. Whatever they decide, a Stern Mandalorian pinball machine will be much in demand. So, as soon as we hear anything concrete we will be sure to let you know.

Christmas is a long way off, and the rumours are already circulating. Don’t blink or you might miss it!

Stern Godzilla Pinball Machine – the Pinball Rumour Mill

Godzilla is recognized by Guinness World Records as the longest continuously running movie franchise in history, having been in on-going production from 1954 to the present day; a total of 28 Japanese films, plus two American films released in 1998 and 2014 have been produced.

The 1998 American film release was accompanied by the launch of Sega’s now classic Godzilla pinball machine. However, the 2014 American film release saw no accompanying pinball launch, and rumours of a forthcoming Godzilla pin have been circulating ever since.

Spooky & Stern

Three years ago it was rumoured that Spooky Pinball was set to produce the new Godzilla pinball. Charlie Emery, who runs Spooky Pinball, is a huge Godzilla fan and when he dropped a hint on the Spooky Podcast that they had secured a new licencing deal, the consensus was that it must be Godzilla. However, news broke later in the year that Stern Pinball had secured the Godzilla licence. Little has been heard since, but recent rumours suggest that Godzilla could now be Stern’s next release.

Sega Godzilla Pinball Machine

Sega Godzilla Pinball Machine

In the 1888 film an iguana nest is exposed to the fallout of a nuclear test in the South Pacific. One of the creatures, Godzilla, travels to New York, causing mayhem along the way and is eventually killed. Later, in the ruins of Madison Square Garden, a single surviving egg hatches and the hatchling roars. The Sega pinball machine expands on the film plot, with the surviving Godzilla egg hatching and once again putting New York under attack.

Designed by Joe Balcer, with artwork by Morgan Weistling and software by Neil Falconer and Orin Day, only 516 Godzilla pinball machines were ever produced. The solid state Sega Godzilla was marketed as “The Meanest, Greenest Game on the Street!” and featured 4 balls, 2 flippers, 4 ‘radioactive breath’ magnets, 6 multiballs, including wizard mode, and a shaker motor.

Sega Godzilla had fairly simple rules. There were lots of multiballs and hardly any modes, but it did include a thought provoking risk/reward strategy. Do you cash in the multiball, or try to get more lined up before starting it? Starting a new multiball from within a multiball was fine, it increased the jackpot and you received a new ball save. But for the really big points you needed to start all five together.

Godzilla 2014

In the 2014 Godzilla reboot, the 30th film in the Godzilla franchise, a soldier attempts to return to his family while caught in the crossfire of an ancient rivalry between Godzilla and two parasitic monsters known as “Massive Unidentified Terrestrial Organisms” or MUTOs, that eat radiation trapped underground.

The film was praised for its visual effects, musical score and cinematography; all features which would greatly benefit a 21st century pinball machine, and all features Stern have been developing over recent years.

Stern Godzilla with Zombie Yeti Artwork

Godzilla Pinball Machine

A little after Stern secured the Godzilla licence, Zombie Yeti shared a thumbnail Godzilla sketch on their Facebook page, tagged #godzilla #rough #notatroll #justforfun.

Zombie Yeti has contributed top drawer artwork to recent Stern releases such as Iron Maiden, Deadpool, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and Avengers Infinity Quest, and a new Zombie Godzilla cabinet, back glass and playfield would more than deliver. But what would it look like?

The smart money must go on a blue coloured theme, certainly for the LE version, as Godzilla’s infamous heat ray, which is more powerful than fire, is typically blue in color. And Stern’s recent use of playfield video, as featured on TMNT and Guns N Roses, could enhance the look by projecting Godzilla’s heat ray on to the playfield itself.

Challenging Multiball with Animatronics

The action in the 2014 movie takes place in Japan, Honolulu, Hawaii, Las Vegas and San Francisco. So, the playfield could walk you through these different zones.

With a nod to the 1998 Sega classic, a modern and perhaps more challenging take on the original multiball could prove a big hit. An animatronic Godzilla with ball lock and the ability to unleash 4 balls into multiball play, in a similar way to the TMNT van would do the trick. And how about a couple of animatronic MUTOs that regurgitate pinballs, just like the T-Rex in Stern’s Jurassic Park Premium and LE? This is beginning to sound like a four-flipper game. And of course we will need a shaker motor; if ever a theme needed one this is it.

21st Century Stern Godzilla Pinball Machine

So, a 21st century Stern Godzilla pinball machine, boasting five zones, with artwork by Zombie Yeti, LED lighting, HD monitors, surround sound, regurgitating MUTOs battling with an animatronic Godzilla, the obligatory shaker motor, four flippers and a properly challenging multiball. I’d certainly buy it!

I wonder if Gary Stern agrees?

Guns N Roses Pinball Arrives at Pinball Heaven

The first of our Guns N Roses pinball machines have arrived at Pinball Heaven and have already been installed on site.

Guns N Roses Not in This Lifetime pinball machine pays tribute to the band’s most successful tour, which took in 158 dates, sold over 5 million tickets and grossed almost $600 million USD.

Playfield Designed as the Stage

Jersey Jack Pinball have hit the jackpot with an exciting, inventive, colourful and challenging game where you have to play to impress and bring the music to the fans. The playfield is designed as the stage with an amazing light show merged with pinball versions of rock instruments, drums replace the normal pop bumpers with a set of real cymbals, one of the rails is an actual set of real drumsticks and on the opposite site another rain shaped in the form of a bass guitar. Leaving you to lock your balls ahead of the big music show on Slash’s guitar.

Guns N Roses Pinball

Designed by Eric Meunier & Slash

Designed by Eric Meunier of JJP and Slash himself this game really makes you feel like you are at a GN’R concert, with huge speakers moving concert lights and a challenging ruleset that’s all about you making the band perform and cashing in on that performance.

The game has some beautiful set pieces with great smooth shots with lots of flow, four flippers keep the action frantic and two screens giving you live band action and hints on what to do next. You can also connect the game to the Internet to get the latest updates and also put your game onto Scorbit to share your scores and challenge other players to a battle around the world. Heck/Spooky/Chicago Gaming Pinball Rumour Mill

Heck/Spooky/Chicago Gaming Pinball Rumour Mill – new title set to arrive in 2021.

It was confirmed by Doug Duba, President of Chicago Gaming Company in March last year that Ben Heckendorn was developing a new pinball machine as a co-production with Chicago Gaming Company and Spooky Pinball.

Chicago Gaming is a sister business of the Churchill Cabinet Company, established in 1904. Chicago Gaming is now producing remakes of extremely popular classic Williams Electronics pinball machines, recreated to exceed the high standards of the original game, and has received critical acclaim for their Attack from Mars, Medieval Madness and Monster Bash remakes.

Spooky Pinball is a family owned & operated business and Wisconsin’s only pinball manufacturer. Starting life in 2010 as a podcast “Spooky Pinball”, in 2011 Charlie Emery took a custom game to the Midwest Gaming Classic. That in turn lead to a meeting with console modder and computer engineer Ben Heck who also shared a passion for pinball. Ben didn’t want to re-theme games, he wanted to build them from the ground up, so driven by a vision for pinball innovation, in February 2013 Emery founded Spooky Pinball LLC. The following year Spooky released America’s Most Haunted, designed by Ben Heck, which swiftly sold out its production run of 150 machines.

The First Heck/Spooky/Chicago Gaming Collaboration

This will be the first collaboration between Heck, Spooky and Chicago Gaming. To date no title has been confirmed, but with Doug Duba stating “the goal is to make the best pinball ever” there has been plenty of speculation as to what the team could be working on.

It has been rumoured that Spooky Pinball was previously looking at a remake of Evil Dead, but the licensing costs were prohibitive. Further speculation has centred around whether Stern currently holds a licence for Beetlejuice, and if not, then could that be a possible avenue to explore.

However, the smart money is not on a remake, or even an original title, but on an original concept. Why else would Chicago Gaming be teaming up with Spooky and Heck?

Original Concept

An original concept would be an attractive proposition, with the saving on licencing costs making it even more attractive in these uncertain pandemic-ridden times. An original concept would also tick the originality box for Heck and Spooky and open up a wider market for Chicago Gaming. So, a Heck/Spooky/Chicago co-production; definitely. A new title; absolutely. And an original concept; most probably.

Nothing has been announced just yet, but considering Spooky Pinball’s usual gestation period, we can’t be too far away from an update.

Full RGB Playfield Lighting

This is a multi-purpose assembly which rises out of the playfield ‘Iron Man-style’ and features an optical spinner and a magnet with a built-in ball sensor. Apart from the free-spinning spinner, the magnet behind can grab the ball, throw it, hold it as a captive ball, or hold it and lower the device into the playfield to turn it into a locked ball.

Led Zeppelin Premium Edition Playfield

The Premium Edition has three flippers, with the third flipper on the upper-right. The playfield features a custom-moulded Hindenburg Zeppelin toy, based on the iconic imagery from the Led Zeppelin I album. This consists of 4 R-O-C-K Stand-Up Targets light Zeppelin Speed Locks, 3 L-E-D Stand-Up Targets and 3 bank Z-E-P drop targets which add action and rebound shots to help complete L-E-D & Z-E-P. Drop Targets can be swept with the upper right flipper.

To give the game the perfect immersive Led Zep atmosphere, players can select the song choice at the start of every ball, plus all models feature an all-new software controlled 10 band graphic equalizer, so you can tune the sound to your particular liking!

Bringing Pinball & Music Together

“There is nothing more energizing and fun than bringing pinball and music together,” said Gary Stern, Chairman and CEO of Stern Pinball, Inc.  “Partnering with Led Zeppelin, we created a one-of-a-kind pinball experience.  It’s our dream goal to create a pinball machine with this iconic rock band.”

The pinball machine boasts its own highly individual Led Zeppelin styled cabinet art, provided by Stephen Jensen. The Pro Edition takes its artwork for the Led Zeppelin III album, while the Premium model turns to the band’s first release, simply called Led Zeppelin for its cabinet, backbox and translite art. The top-of-the-range Limited Edition model uses the Icarus character, drawn by Joe Petagno, which never appeared on a Led Zeppelin album cover, but forms the legendary logo of the band’s record label, Swan Song Records.
