X-Men Pinball Machine – The Pinball Rumour Mill

Recent rumours have suggested that Stern Pinball is about to launch an X-Men pinball machine, based on the successful Marvel Comics superhero team. And with a teaser video appearing on Stern’s YouTube channel and Stern’s website suggesting a launch date of 9th September, what are we to expect from their latest offering?

Created by writer/editor Stan Lee and artist/co-plotter Jack Kirby, X-Men first appeared in 1963. Following their 1975 revival and subsequent direction under writer Chris Claremont, X-Men became one of Marvel’s most recognisable and successful franchises. They have appeared in numerous books, television shows, 20th Century Fox’s X-Men films, video games., and now a Stern pinball machine.

The rumoured “Uncanny X-Men” pinball machine from Stern is likely to carry over several features from recent Stern pinball machines. particularly those that have been well-received by the pinball community, such as their Spike System Integration, Innovative Playfield Elements, Insider Connected Platform and Custom Art and Audio.

Spike System Integration

Stern’s Spike 2 system has been a staple in their recent machines, providing advanced audio and video capabilities, network connectivity through Stern Insider Connected, and robust game software updates. There are strong rumours that the Uncanny X-Men machine could be one of the first to feature the new Spike 3 system, which is expected to offer even more advanced functionalities and improved gameplay experiences.

Pinball Heaven recently installed a Foo Fighters premium pinball machine on hire in the corporate hospitality area of the Emirates Old Trafford stadium in Manchester for the start of the UK leg of the Foo Fighters Everything or Nothing at All tour. The tour supports their eleventh studio album, “But Here We Are,” and includes a series of stadium shows across North America and the UK.

“Do you love rock’n’roll music?”

The Pinball Heaven Foo Fighters Premium kept fans entertained until the band took to the stage at 7.40pm, with Dave Ghrol screaming “Do you love rock’n’roll music?” before delighting the 50,000 strong crowd with an incredible two and a half hour set of Foo Fighters classics, kicking off with Monkey Wrench and eventually closing the show at 10.15pm with a huge Manchester singalong of Best of You.

This was the first time the Foo Fighters had played in Manchester since June 2018 and the atmosphere was electric, so what better place to install a Foo Fighters premium pinball machine!

Back to the Future in 2024 or 2025?

Rumours have been circulating for some time suggesting that Dutch Pinball is planning to release a new “Back to the Future” pinball machine. The anticipated reveal is said to be set for the 40th annual Chicago Pinball Expo in October 2024. However, another train of thought suggests the reveal could be set to coincide with the 40th anniversary of the release of the first Back to the Future film in 2025. So, will Dutch Pinball release a sequel to the iconic 1990 Data East Back to the Future pinball machine, and if so, when?

The 40th anniversary of “Back to the Future”

The “Back to the Future” film series, directed by Robert Zemeckis and produced by Steven Spielberg, follows the time-traveling adventures of teenager Marty McFly (Michael J. Fox) and eccentric scientist Doc Brown (Christopher Lloyd). The trilogy spans from 1985 to 1990, with Marty and Doc traveling between the 1950s, 1980s, the future year of 2015, and even the Old West. The films are celebrated for their innovative storytelling, memorable characters, and ground-breaking special effects, making them a cultural phenomenon and beloved classics in the science fiction genre.

The 40th anniversary of “Back to the Future” in 2025 will mark four decades since the beloved sci-fi adventure debuted in 1985, and 35 years since the Data East pinball release.

The 1990 Data East Back to the Future pinball was the first and only officially licensed “Back to the Future” pinball machine. Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland Announced by DPX

Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland – the first release from DPX to be revealed in the third quarter of this year.

Dutch Pinball have officially confirmed that the first title from its new subsidiary, Dutch Pinball Exclusive (DPX), will be Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland, based on the paper pinball mockup created by John Popadiuk at his former company Zidware. When released, Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland will be available from Dutch Pinball’s exclusive UK Distributor, Pinball Heaven.

Eagerly Anticipated

Although Popadiuk was unable to bring any games to market with Zidware, many people fell in love with the black-and-white artwork created by Zombie Yeti. Melvin Brouwer-Williams took the game’s original paper layout and developed it into a playable game.

Dutch Pinball has created DPX to deliver boutique, top draw pinball machines for the discerning collector, so their take on Alice should elevate the game to another level, making it one of the most eagerly anticipated pinball launches of the year.

For some time now, rumours have been circulating, but we can now confirm that this highly anticipated game is indeed “Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland.” Some may be familiar with the original concept design by John Popadiuk, initially named “Alice in Wonderland.”

This game has evolved from a paper concept into an extraordinary pinball machine. It features hand-sculpted playfield plastics, richly coloured playfields, laser-finished ball guides, and a stunning interactive sculpted topper. We offer not just a pinball machine, but a piece of art for your home.

The game is designed and engineered by Melvin Brouwer-Williams.

This information will also be announced on our social media channels 1800h Dutch time.

The production run will be limited to a maximum of 500 units. We are not accepting orders or deposits at this time and strongly suggest you do the same. For now, if you haven’t already, please start a list to gather interested individuals for this title and let us know the potential demand in your area. This information will be considered when we allocate the production run among distributors. Please keep in mind that while we strive to meet every demand, we may not be able to fulfil all requests. We will do our best to ensure a fair distribution for this and future titles.

Pinball Heaven has been appointed as a distributor for Color DMD Pinball Displays.

Color DMD specialises in creating high-quality, vibrant color displays for pinball machines. Color DMD displays replace the traditional monochrome dot matrix displays found in older pinball machines with modern, full-color screens, enhancing the visual experience of playing these classic games.

Color DMD displays offer several advantages over the original monochrome displays. They can display animations, videos, and high-resolution graphics, adding a new level of excitement to gameplay, creating a more immersive experience. Additionally, the vibrant colours make the displays easier to see and game information easier to understand, such as scores, modes, and game objectives.

Color DMD displays are designed to be compatible with a wide range of pinball machines, including popular titles from manufacturers like Stern, Williams, Bally, and Data East. Installation is relatively straightforward, and the displays are designed to integrate seamlessly with the existing hardware of the pinball machine.

H-LED Displays

ColorDMD H-LED dot matrix displays contain over 2000 active RGB LEDs.  These displays serve as a replacement for five Data East games that originally shipped with half-height 128×16 DMD displays (Checkpoint, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Batman, Star Trek, and Hook).  The displays incorporate the same P2.5 64×32 LED modules used in our standard displays.  Only half the rows are illuminated.  The unused rows are hidden by the speaker panel or backglass.

LCD Displays

The original ColorDMD LCD display uses a high-resolution, low-voltage, LCD screen to provide a full color replacement for the game’s original screen.  All displays support six different rendering modes including high-resolution upscaling to fill the space between the dots.  The LCD provides excellent uniformity of dot size and spacing, regardless of intensity.

LED Displays

ColorDMD LED dot matrix displays contain over 4000 discrete RGB LEDs.  LED displays have higher contrast and more vivid colors than backlit LCD displays, but cannot produce large dots or upscaling display effects.  LED displays are similar in size to the game’s original plasma or LED display.

X-LED Displays

ColorDMD X-LED (192×64) dot matrix displays contain over 12000 discrete RGB LEDs.  These displays serve as a replacement for four games that used large format plasma display (Baywatch, Mary Shelly”s Frankenstein, Batman Forever, and Maverick).

Knapp Arcade stated earlier this year that Dutch Pinball had their production plans laid out for the next three to four years, with their first project rumoured to be a smaller run of a very high-end Alice in Wonderland pinball machine. More recently Dutch Pinball themselves teased a new brand “Dutch Pinball Exclusive” (DPX) and an upcoming game.

This new sister company marks an extension of Dutch Pinball’s existing portfolio, focusing on producing limited editions of high-quality pinball machines for collectors. Barry Driessen, founder of Dutch Pinball, in collaboration with Melvin Williams, has initiated DPX to cater to a niche market. DPX represents a commitment to the craft of pinball machine creation, combining the renowned quality of Dutch Pinball with a focus on exclusivity.  So, could DPX’s first offering be a small run boutique Alice in Wonderland pinball machine?

Gottlieb 1948

The most notable Alice in Wonderland pinball machine was released by Gottlieb in 1948. One of the so-called “Fairy Tale” games produced by Gottlieb between 1947 and1948 this electro-mechanical pinball machine had 6 flippers, 10 passive bumpers and 2 kick-out holes. It also featured artwork depicting characters and scenes from the novel including Alice, the White Rabbit, the Mad Hatter, and the Queen of Hearts. In addition to the vintage Gottlieb version, there have been several other Alice in Wonderland pinball machines produced since.

Alice in Wonderland & John Popadiuk

When John Popadiuk was a designer at Bally Williams, he created a unique Alice in Wonderland prototype, inspired by Lewis Carroll’s 1865 book and the 1951 Disney film. Later, Popadiuk founded Zidware Pinball, where he faced significant setbacks. Originally dedicated to designing pinball toppers, the company broadened its scope by undertaking the production of the Alien remake for Pinball Brothers and the Alien LVs. Furthermore, they introduced the highly acclaimed Fun House 2.0 Rudy’s Nightmare kits, leading to rumours that a full-on Fun House pinball remake could be on the cards. And with recent partnerships announced with Planetary Pinball, Classic Playfield Reproductions and Brian Allen, it looks like that Fun House pinball remake could be just around the corner.

Pedretti Pinball has recently announced an agreement with Planetary Pinball for the remake and production of iconic Bally/Williams games. The agreement is dedicated to the thorough development and quality production of many different Bally/Williams games. Pedretti is currently working in close contact with Planetary Pinball on the development of the first remake, which is to be produced with genuine Bally/Williams parts and is now said to be in the final stage of development.

Classic Playfield Reproductions

Classic Playfield Reproductions are a Canadian company, that has been producing playfields for the hobby for almost two decades. They insist on strict provenance involving genuine gameboard blanks from the American mill, the original traditional manufacturing procedures, and individually crafted by people/tools/machines (not robotics). Even their clearcoats are still applied via human and gun. Classic Playfield Reproductions’ legacy of experience has produced a well-trusted playfield quality after all these years. They will allow Pedretti to offer the most “bulletproof” playfields being manufactured, with the most proven longevity against wear, cracks, chips, pooling, or crazing.

Pedretti has recently partnered with Brian Allen of Flyland Designs. An extremely talented pinball artist with an immense passion for Bally/Williams games, Allen has reimagined brand-new artwork for Pedretti’s first iconic pinball remake, having previously worked with Activision, Marvel, Adult Swim, Metallica, 311, Hulk Hogan, Harley Davidson, Chick-Fil-A, and many more. However, Allen is most known for his work designing Gritty; the Philadelphia Flyers mascot that became an internet phenomenon. He has also reinvented iconic Bally/Williams backglasses and other artwork for pinball machines with Planetary Pinball, and has been building a steady following in the pinball community for many years.

Fun House Pinball Remake: What?

So, what would a Fun House pinball remake by Pedretti Gaming look like?
