Back to the Future in 2024 or 2025?

Rumours have been circulating for some time suggesting that Dutch Pinball is planning to release a new “Back to the Future” pinball machine. The anticipated reveal is said to be set for the 40th annual Chicago Pinball Expo in October 2024. However, another train of thought suggests the reveal could be set to coincide with the 40th anniversary of the release of the first Back to the Future film in 2025. So, will Dutch Pinball release a sequel to the iconic 1990 Data East Back to the Future pinball machine, and if so, when?

The 40th anniversary of “Back to the Future”

The “Back to the Future” film series, directed by Robert Zemeckis and produced by Steven Spielberg, follows the time-traveling adventures of teenager Marty McFly (Michael J. Fox) and eccentric scientist Doc Brown (Christopher Lloyd). The trilogy spans from 1985 to 1990, with Marty and Doc traveling between the 1950s, 1980s, the future year of 2015, and even the Old West. The films are celebrated for their innovative storytelling, memorable characters, and ground-breaking special effects, making them a cultural phenomenon and beloved classics in the science fiction genre.

The 40th anniversary of “Back to the Future” in 2025 will mark four decades since the beloved sci-fi adventure debuted in 1985, and 35 years since the Data East pinball release.

The 1990 Data East Back to the Future pinball was the first and only officially licensed “Back to the Future” pinball machine. It features artwork and themes from the first two movies and includes audio clips and music from the films. Designed by Joe Kaminkow and Ed Cebula, with artwork by Paul Faris, it became a classic for fans of the franchise and pinball enthusiasts alike.

Gameplay and Features

In the Data East Back to the Future pinball, players are tasked with completing missions tied to the movie’s plot, such as hitting specific targets to advance through different time periods. This interactive storytelling keeps the gameplay engaging and dynamic. The playfield is meticulously designed with various ramps, targets, and features inspired by the movies. Key elements include:

  • Time Circuits: A digital display mimicking the DeLorean’s time circuits, allowing players to see different dates and times.
  • Audio Clips: Featuring memorable quotes and sound effects from the movies, enhancing the nostalgic experience.
  • Special Modes: Players can engage in unique modes like “Save the Clock Tower” and multiball, adding layers of excitement and challenge.

The Data East Back to the Future pinball machine is a beautiful blend of cinematic and gaming magic. Its detailed design, engaging gameplay, and nostalgic appeal make it a treasured piece of pinball history. Though not as technologically advanced as modern machines it remains a favourite among collectors and fans. So, an updated Dutch Pinball, or perhaps limited edition DPX offering to bring the game up to date would make absolute sense.
