Jaws Pinball Machine by Stern – swimming our way before Christmas?
In our March 2019 Pinball Rumour Mill we reported that five new pinball machines were rumoured to be heading into production: Stern Pinball James Bond, Stern Pinball Jurassic World, Jersey Jack Pinball Willy Wonka, Jersey Jack Pinball Guns N Roses and Stern Pinball Jaws. Of that list the first four all made it in timely fashion, however the Stern Jaws pinball machine has so far been conspicuous by its absence. But all that might be about to change.
Rumours are once more circulating that Stern’s next offering could be based on the Steven Spielberg classic. And what’s even more exciting is that the word on the street is that Stern will be making an announcement this side of Christmas. But what would a new Stern Jaws pinball machine look like?

The original 1975 hit movie – and Keith Elwin
It is taken as read that any self-respecting Jaws pinball machine should be based on the original 1975 hit movie, which grossed twice as much as the three sequels together. And with top-ranking competitive player Keith Elwin, who helped design Stern’s Godzilla, Jurassic Park, Iron Maiden and Avengers Infinity Quest, rumoured to be on Stern’s Jaws design team, we have the combination of iconic theme with highly engaging and intricate game play. It sounds like a hit already.
“You’re gonna need a bigger boat”
Featuring the three main characters of the 1975 film: Chief Martin Brody, Quint and Matt Hooper, played by Roy Scheider, Robert Shaw and Richard Dreyfuss respectively is a must, as is the inclusion of their most iconic lines such as “Smile, you son of a b-tch” and “You’re gonna need a bigger boat.” As with Venom, Stern could also allow you to choose your host; Brody, Quint or Hooper, and different gameplay modes could represent different scenes from the film, working seamlessly with Stern’s Insider Connected, to allow you to track and save your progress.
“Orca” bash toy and play field video
The award winning John Williams soundtrack featuring the unforgettable “Shark” theme, supported by a Stern stereo sound system with 3-channel amplifier and 10-band Graphic Equalizer, will certainly create the required atmosphere. But the sea on a pinball playfield, how’s that going to work? An “Orca” lobster boat bash toy surely has to figure, so perhaps some play field video could help here. It could certainly help portray the Orca in various states of disrepair as the story progresses, which would further bring the game to life and enhance the play.
Custom sculpture shark’s mouth
And how will the shark itself be represented? A skill-shot hitting the gas bottle in a custom sculpture shark’s mouth would work well, supported by more play field video footage, perhaps even in 3D? And a shaker motor on the LE Edition would certainly enhance this playfield experience.
So, a Stern Jaws pinball machine based on the 1975 film featuring Brody, Quint and Hooper and their most iconic lines, gameplay by Keith Elwin, different gameplay modes, an Orca Bash Toy, Jaws skill shot, play field video and atmospheric soundtrack, seamlessly integrated with Insider Connected appears to be the order of the day. Throw in different cabinet and translite combinations to further enhance the experience and it looks like a pretty good Christmas wish list to us.
