The Getaway: High Speed II

The Getaway: High Speed II is a classic pinball machine released by Williams in February 1992.  It was designed by Steve Ritchie, with software by Dwight Sullivan, artwork contributions from Doug Watson and Mark Sprenger, and music by Dan Forden.

A sequel to the original High Speed (1986), The Getaway featured three flippers, multiple ramps, orbits, slingshots, a tunnel, kickback, and video mode. It introduced enhancements such as a dot-matrix display, and replaced the traditional plunger with a gear shift mechanism that plays into core gameplay and video modes. But The Getaway’s standout feature was the Supercharger – a magnetic ball accelerator which launches the ball repeatedly around a loop, simulating a speeding car effect.

Gameplay in The Getaway: High Speed II focuses on running traffic lights to start multiball jackpots and building RPM to shift gears, unlocking bonuses, video mode, Supercharger play, and the ultimate Redline Mania mode.

Collectors and players regard The Getaway as a high-energy, skillful table with strong replay value and It ranks favourably among classic pinball machines.

On our latest Pinball Machine Repair trip to Jersey and Guernsey we carried out a full pinball machine repair on a Getaway: High Speed II that initially would not power on, which we traced to a burnt connector. While on site we also fitted a complete red silicone rubber kit to improve performance, aesthetics and reliability, and realigned the up/down ramp at the back of the playfield, which had slipped out of position. A number of smaller tweaks and adjustments were made to ensure smooth operation throughout, leaving the machine refreshed, responsive and ready to play once again.

Lethal Weapon 3

Lethal Weapon 3 is a pinball machine released by Data East in January 1992. It was designed by Joe Kaminkow and Ed Cebula, with artwork by Markus Rothkranz and music/sound by Brian Schmidt.

Based on the hit film starring Mel Gibson and Danny Glover, Lethal Weapon 3 brought Hollywood action to the pinball world. The machine featured three flippers, multiple ramps and orbits, a captive ball, a drop target bank, and an interactive gun handle for launching the ball. It also incorporated a dot-matrix display, then still a novelty, with digitised video clips and animations from the movie.

Gameplay in Lethal Weapon 3 centres on completing weapon modes, collecting clues, and progressing through scenes inspired by the film. Players build towards multiball by locking balls, while jackpots, video modes, and timed challenges keep the pace fast and exciting. The use of the gun handle to start modes and interact with video sequences added a unique arcade feel to the experience.

Collectors and players remember Lethal Weapon 3 as a loud, brash, and entertaining machine, packed with 1990s action-movie energy. It remains a popular title from Data East’s line-up and a nostalgic favourite for fans of the franchise.

On the same Pinball Machine Repair trip we fitted a new power supply board to a Lethal Weapon 3 pinball machine – as is quite common for these games. The original board had suffered a capacitor leak on the 5v side, a fault that often causes the game to flicker on and off and, in turn, damages key components. As part of the repair we also replaced a couple of affected transistors, ensuring the machine was once again stable, reliable and ready to play.
