King Kong Pinball – is Stern about to go ape?
As reported in our December Rumour Mill blog post, rumours surrounding a potential King Kong themed machine have been circulating for months. However, speculation has now intensified following Stern Pinball’s recent trademark filings for both “King Kong” and “Myth of Terror Island,” suggesting a new pinball machine centred on the iconic giant ape is well and truly in the pipeline.
King Kong Pinball: Community Speculation
The internet has been abuzz with discussions about the potential new King Kong pinball machine. Enthusiasts have noted that renowned designer Keith Elwin is rumoured to be leading this project, further heightening expectation. Forums such as Pinside, has seen users expressing excitement about the theme and its possibilities. One user commented on the potential for integrating Kong with existing titles, stating, “But if they really do have the license for King Kong, why not create a link between King Kong and Godzilla, sorta like Williams did with NBA Fastbreak?” So maybe Stern could be considering a stand-alone machine followed by a Kong versus Godzilla That could be quite something!
Stern Pinball Godzilla
Stern Pinball has an established history of drawing inspiration from legendary monster franchises. In July 2024 the company honoured the 70th anniversary of Godzilla with a special edition pinball machine, showcasing its dedication to cinematic icons, making it entirely plausible that a Kong-themed machine could be next.
Data East
This isn’t the first time a King Kong pinball machine has been considered. In the early 1990s, Data East developed a King Kong machine that never reached mass production. However Stern Pinball’s current trademark filings might well indicate a renewed effort to bring this classic theme to life. And given Stern’s success with their critically acclaimed Godzilla pinball machine, introducing Kong could build very nicely on this success
