Is a Queen Pinball Machine on its way for 2021?

Rumours have been circulating about the possibility of a Queen pinball machine since a Stern Galaxy pin was spotted in a bar scene in the award winning Queen movie Bohemian Rhapsody. But was this a tenuous link, or a teasingly clever piece of product placement?

Heighway Pinball

In March 2017 at the Texas Pinball Festival, Heighway Pinball announced that their next two pinball machines, Queen and Playboy, would be licensed and designed by Barry Oursler. Oursler has an impressive CV of pinball design, spending the first 26 years of his career as a Game Designer with Williams/Bally/Midway. However, on 26th April 2018, Heighway Pinball closed the doors on its factory, laid off its employees, and was liquidated soon after. So, the Queen project ever came to fruition. Oursler is now the Game Designer at Deeproot Tech, based in San Antonio in Texas.

Pinball Brothers or Stern?

With the demise of Heighway Pinball, four of the Directors formed Pinball Brothers and it was rumoured the Queen pinball machine licence may have gone with them. If it did, then a Pinball Brothers Queen pinball should most definitely be on the cards.

If it didn’t, then on the basis that Bravado, Universal Music Group’s industry-leading merchandise and brand management company, who handles Queen’s merchandising – and this is the same Bravado who agreed the merchandising deal for The Beatles pinball machine – might well have set up a deal to licence the Queen pinball machine to Stern Pinball.

Mercury, May, Deacon & Taylor

Whether it be Pinball rothers or Stern, a pinball machine featuring Mercury, May, Deacon and Taylor could only turn out to be very special indeed. The flamboyance of Freddie coupled with Queen’s iconic imagery would make for sensational playfields, cabinets and backglass – and the soundtrack would have to rank amongst the best ever to come out of a pinball cabinet. We Are The Champions for a bonus play would be an absolute must, and how about Under Pressure for hurry ups and Another One Bites The Dust for the end of the game?
