Released in March 1992, the Addams Family pinball machine is the best selling pinball machine of all time. Designed by Pat Lawlor and Larry DeMar and manufactured by Midway under the Bally name, the Addams Family pinball machine is based on the 1991 film of the same name and features custom speech by the stars of the film, Raul Julia and Anjelica Huston.

The machine’s game card describes the game objective as being to “Explore the strange world of the Addams Family.” With that in mind there is no single player goal, though there are two central objectives:

Tour the Mansion: The Addams Family mansion is located in the centre of the playfield and has 12 rooms, each of which offers a different award. Rooms are awarded to the player from the electric chair shot in the centre of the player field. When a room is given to the player the electric chair light goes out until the player conducts a Bear Kick, however some other switches will relight it, but only temporarily. Best practice is for the player to activate multiple mansion rooms in order to gain the best scores. Once every award is collected, a wizard mode called Tour the Mansion becomes available.

 
Vault Multiball: In the top-right section of the playfield is a blue bookcase, representing the bookcase that Gomez shows Uncle Fester in the movie, hiding the entrance to the family vault. Hits to the bookcase award letters in the word GREED. Once the word is completed, the bookcase turns to expose the vault entrance. A shot to the vault locks the ball for future multiball play, or starts multiball if two balls have been previously locked. The bookcase opens for certain other modes of play as well. If a ball enters the vault while the bookcase is still closed, it immediately opens and the player is credited with locking the ball.

With additional gameplay features including Graveyard At Max, The Mamushka, Hit Cousin It, Quick Multiball, Fester’s Tunnel Hunt, Séance, Thing Multiball, Lite Extra Ball and Raise The Dead, it is little wonder the Addams Family pinball machine has long been credited with starting a the boom in pinball popularity.
